The humble tarpaulin was one of the mediums chosen by US artist Keith Haring to create some of the most influential works of the late 20th century.
While Haring’s main project was the subway lines of New York, he worked on a variety of mediums including tarpaulin.
Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat: Crossing Lines curator Dr Dieter Buchhart said Haring, who died in 1990, liked tarpaulin for its mobility.
“He also did a lot of works on huge rolls of paper,” Dr Buchhart said.
“He was a classically trained artist who enjoyed finding different materials. He was unsatisfied with the notion of classical art history and wanted to use different techniques.”
