The new principals taking over at Melbourne schools in 2020

It’s the changing of the guard at some of Melbourne’s best schools, with prized principal jobs turning over in readiness for the 2020 school year. See who will be taking on the top job at your school.

As the academic year winds down the principal end of season draft is in full swing.

Some of Melbourne’s most prestigious schools, Melbourne Grammar, Trinity and Carey, are welcoming new heads for 2020.

Melbourne Grammar School will see one of its alumni in Philip Grutzner return to the school as headmaster.

Jonathan Walter from the Woodleigh School will step into the role of principal at Carey Grammar after Mr Grutzner’s departure

Trinity Grammar, which was embroiled in a spat over a hair cut which saw people organising a campaign truck to undermine then headmaster Dr Michael Davies, will have a permanent head for the first time in 18 months.

Former Carey principal Phil De Young has been interim-principal to calm things down, but will step aside for new principal Adrian Farrer, via Wangaratta’s Cathedral College where he has been principal.

Dr Davies, who has been working at the Catholic Education Office, will be principal of St Bernard’s Essendon next year.

Many of the principals are moving on after 10 years, either by choice or a board decision.

Insiders say that there is now a school of thought that school leaders need to be turned over every 10 years.

Long term Huntingtower School principal Mr Sholto Bowen retires after 21 years at the school.

Siena College principal Mrs Gaynor Robson-Garth steps down after 13 years in charge at the Camberwell Catholic girls’ school. In an address to Catholic principals a few weeks ago she noted the increasing complexity of the role.

After what it said was a worldwide search, Wesley appointed Melbourne Grammar School deputy Nicholas Evans as principal. Having studied at the school and then taught there for 20 years he replaced Dr Helen Drennen.

Here’s some of the big moves for 2020:

MELBOURNE GRAMMAR SCHOOL

IN: Philip Grutzner.

A former student at MGS, Mr Grutzner will be headmaster from next year, the first person to return in that capacity in the school’s 160 year history.

He has been principal at Carey Grammar School since 2010. Mr Grutzner was told last year that his contract would not be renewed.

His two daughters attended Carey and he is understood to have been disappointed by what he described as a “difficult” decision.

In a newsletter to parents at the time he said:

“Since last week’s announcement of the decision made by the Carey Board, the overwhelming support I have received from my family and friends, students, staff, parents and professional colleagues has been affirming. It has been a difficult experience, as you may appreciate, but I have everything to be proud of and will continue to give my best to the Carey community with grace, dignity and professionalism.”

Before Carey, Mr Grutzner was principal at Braemar College.

At the co-ed Carey he has been seen as progressive and under his leadership the school has embraced gender diversity.

Given the recent discussion around “toxic masculinity” at Melbourne Grammar, some insiders say he could be a circuit breaker.

OUT: Roy Kelley

The headmaster for nine years, Mr Kelley retires at the end of the year.

He was previously headmaster at Auckland’s King’s College from 2003 and deputy headmaster at Perth’s Hale School in the previous 10 years.

His last month has been unsettled by the “toxic masculinity” debate spearheaded by a female house leader who used the house dinner to tell everyone that the school needed to do a lot more to equip the boys for the future. The speech and ill advised tweets by school footy staffer and former Demon Brad Green has polarised some people involved with the school.

CAREY GRAMMAR SCHOOL

IN: Jonathan Walter

Following an extensive international search, the Carey board appointed Jonathan Walter as the new head of the Baptist grammar based in Kew.

“The board unanimously agrees that Jonathan is a progressive leader who will take our school community, students, staff and parents into a world that holds enormous potential for those willing to embrace exciting challenges”.

Jonathan will join Carey in January 2020, taking over from Philip Grutzner, who will leave the school at the end of this year.

There has been some disquiet at Woodleigh over recent months over the handling of the coke and grog in a limo binge by some Year 12s on the way the school dinner in August.

The school defended its handling of the issue on the basis that the students had been dealt with using Restorative Justice principles.

OUT: Philip Grutzner

Mr Grutzner did not have his contract renewed. It was interpreted as school councils deciding that 10 years in a job is enough and fresh ideas are needed.

As mentioned above, Mr Grutzner is back to his old school at MGS.

Instead of winding down, Mr Bain-King has ended up in the middle of the CBC-PCW union.

He has been consulting with families to nut out what the shape of a co-ed offering for CBC St Kilda might look like.

The current thought is that it could be a parallel education model where girls and boys are separated but as they get to senior years share classes.
