The University of Melbourne has dropped in the world rankings.

Victoria’s top university has fallen in the world rankings as the nation’s institutions were found to have deteriorating graduate employability.

The University of Melbourne dropped three places to 41st across the globe in a year, while Monash climbed three places to 55th.

QS World University Rankings analysts found the progress of Australia’s universities was hindered by declining graduate employability — 32 of the nation’s 36 institutions fell further back in a year.

Staff to student ratios also worsened in all but two Aussie universities.

Despite this, two thirds of the nation’s universities had improved their world ranking, while a third dropped in place.

While the The University of Melbourne suffered a decline, more than 100,000 surveyed academics named it as Australia’s best.

It featured in the top 20 globally for academic reputation, while more than 50,000 employers said it boasted the nation’s most successful graduates.

Of other Victorian universities, RMIT reached equal 223rd position in the QS World rankings, followed by Deakin at equal 275th then Swinburne at 372nd.

ANU was the nation’s best ranked university, falling two spots to equal 31st., followed by the University of Sydney, at 40th, then the University of Melbourne at 41st.

Nationwide, international student ratios were found to be up relative to global comparisons, with two thirds of Aussie institutions increasing their numbers in 12 months.

Across the globe, the best ranked universities were in the United States, with Massachusetts Institute of Technology topping the list, followed by Stanford then Harvard.
