Aussie university students have given their worst ever satisfaction rating as Federal Education Minister Dan Tehan shot off a warning to institutions.

Just 78.4 per cent of undergraduate students were happy with their education — the lowest response since the Student Experience Survey began eight years earlier.

Melbourne University — Victoria’s most prestigious university — dropped behind its previous results to a below-average satisfaction rate of 77.6 per cent.

But it wasn’t the worst ranking, with two others sitting further down.

Victoria University received the lowest satisfaction rating, with a quarter of students not pleased, with La Trobe up next, at 75.9%

Deakin University was the winner, with 83.5 per cent of its students happy, followed by Swinburne University and then Federation University.

Monash University sat in the middle of the state’s institutions for student satisfaction, at 78.6 per cent.

Federal Education Minister Dan Tehan called on universities to focus on “how to improve the student experience”.

“The Morrison Government introduced performance-based funding for universities to

incentivise them to focus on the student,” he said.

Those key areas included student experience, success, employment outcomes and participation of vulnerable groups.

Veterinary science and medicine took the biggest hit, with student feedback falling by 6 per cent and 4 per cent respectively in a year.

The annual survey’s highest national rating has been 80 per cent of students satisfied with their overall educational experience.
