An analysis of 2014 and 2018 NAPLAN scores has revealed the schools with the most improved results in Melbourne’s east over the past five years.

The schools with the most improved Year 5 results between 2014 and 2018 were Knox Central Primary School, which has 108 pupils, and Mount Waverley Heights Primary School, which has 190 students.

The News Corp Australia analysis compared each school’s combined results for each NAPLAN subject in 2014 with the 2018 results.

The 2019 results are not publicly available yet.

Mount Waverley Heights Primary School principal Sharon Reiss-Stone praised the school’s staff and students for the 10.5 per cent rise over the five-year period.

“I think it comes down to our shared vision, goals and targeted learning as a school,” she said.

“It’s also about having the right people on board and we have a fantastic and dedicated team of teachers and staff here.”

With the national tests introduced in Victoria in 2008, Ms Reiss-Stone said having a decade’s worth of data gave the school an indication of what was working well and what needing improving.

But she said it didn’t tell the whole story.

“While these tests are important, we want to make sure that students have access to a 21st century, well-rounded education that will prepare them for success in the future and the real world,” she said.

Croydon Community School and Auburn High School were the most improved in Melbourne’s east when it came to Year 9 results.

A Federal Department of Education spokesperson said NAPLAN provided insight for schools and teachers about how well education programs were working, and where there was need for improvement.

“NAPLAN shows parents how their children are progressing against national standards and provides a basis for discussion with their child’s teachers,” the spokesperson said.

“It also provides students with an opportunity to see what they have learned and how they are progressing over time.”
