Year 12 students from a private school in Melbourne’s east let off flares as they marched through the streets during muck-up day celebrations.
Footage showed students from Marcellin College in Bulleen walking through parks and streets in a large gathering that appeared to be in breach of coronavirus restrictions.
In the video, filmed on Wednesday, the students are seen walking through smoke from the flares.
The teens are wearing full-length black body suits underneath their uniforms and some appear to be drinking alcohol and carrying water pistols.
Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius was asked about muck-up day antics on Thursday and said he was understanding of how tough the year had been for year 12s.
“Let’s not get ourselves whipped up into too much of a frenzy about muck up day and about schoolies,” he said.
“I know schools have been working very hard to try and support their students in what has been a terrible year for them.
“I take my hat off to the VCE kids I know because they’ve just been doing an amazing job and I get a bit emotional about it because I feel the impact of this for my kids.
“Police will always be understanding particularly when it comes to children but the key piece here is please mums, dads, schools, please support your kids in doing the right thing. We’re nearly there, let’s not throw it away.”
The school has been contacted for comment.
