Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton was quick to deny unconfirmed reports he had stepped down from the top job on Wednesday, the day Victoria suffered its worst toll of the pandemic.

Lights go off on Sutton during press conference

Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton has responded to reports he quit the top job with a tongue-in-cheek tweet.

Rumours circulated on Wednesday afternoon that Mr Sutton had left his position after failing to appear at a press conference with Premier Daniel Andrews.

A Twitter user replied to a tweet reporting on the false rumour, saying: “Might as well have said nickelback have broken up, same level of middle aged women would be upset”.

Mr Sutton replied, “What?! Nickelback have broken up??”

The Herald Sun confirmed Mr Sutton is on leave and had not left his position.
