A top fashion executive has walked away from his career, saying in a statement he and his wife agreed to let her career “take priority”.

A leading fashion business executive has walked away from his career, saying in a statement he and his wife have agreed to let her career “take priority”.

Rubin Ritter, co-CEO of European e-commerce business Zalando will leave the company next year, the company announced Sunday.. The departure is two years earlier than scheduled in his contract.

“I want to devote more time to my growing family,” he said after spending 11 years at the company. “My wife and I have agreed that for the coming years, her professional ambitions should take priority.”

He added he was “eager to allow myself time to explore new interests beyond Zalando” and said working at the company was a “gift and a privilege, and it will be incredibly hard for me to leave it behind”.

Cristina Stenbeck, the chair of the company’s supervisory board, said the board “clearly regrets” that Mr Ritter chose to put his wife and family ahead of the company. But the board can “only be immensely grateful to Rubin and the broader leadership team for the position of strength in which Zalando finds itself today”.

The company sells brands including Polo Ralph Lauren, Karl Lagerfeld and Coach.

Mr Ritter has been in the role of co-CEO since 2010, sharing the role with Robert Gentz and David Schneider. According to SiliconRepublic the platform has become one of Europe’s largest for online fashion and lifestyle items. The company made $16.3 billion (€10 billion) in gross sales profits in 2020 alone, and employs 14,000 people.

Mr Gentz and Mr Schneider will remain on as co-CEOs following Mr Ritter’s departure.
