Shannon Bennett’s Richmond burger joint Benny Burger shuts its doors

Has Shannon Bennett’s ritzy Richmond takeaway venture Benny Burger — boasting sustainable and organic produce — become the latest victim of the Swan St burger wars?

Shannon Bennett’s ritzy Richmond takeaway venture Benny Burger has shut its doors, a seeming victim of the Swan St burger wars.

For lease signs appeared on the now vacant shop over the weekend.

A number of high end burger venues have fought hard for competition along the increasingly swank strip in recent years including Beer and Burger Bar, 1090 Burger and Grill’d.

Benny was launched in June 2017 with a swank event including guests George Calombaris.

The burger venue was supposed to provide an “ethical burger” that emphasised sustainable and organic produce.

The name pays tribute to Bennett’s dad Benny.

But it is understood the venue was closed due to some difficulties with the location that did not gel with Bennett’s long term vision of the chain.

It is understood the Benny Burger in the Melbourne CBD at Normanby Chambers will stay open, alongside other Bennett venues including Barista By Vue and seafood restaurant Iki-jime by Vue.

The expansive Bennett restaurant kingdom also includes his signature Vue De Monde restaurant in the Rialto and the Lui Bar.

Bennett also runs the Piggery Café at Burnham Beeches.

Bennett is originally from Westmeadows in Melbourne’s north but after training with some of the world’s best chefs — including Albert Roux, Marco Pierre White and Alain Ducasse — became a household name himself, serving as a guest judge on MasterChef Australia.

Last year former Neighbours star Madeline West confirmed her separation from Bennett after 13 years together.

A sprawling Lorne property the couple had owned, at 1200 Great Ocean Rd, was off-loaded for about $4 million soon after the separation.
