IT'S WAR!

Gold Coast rallies to wipe out mosquitoes

Words:  Sam Stolz

Mayor Tom Tate has declared war on the Gold Coast’s public enemy number one – the dreaded mosquito.

'We'll fight them in the mangroves'

The council has begun an aerial fogging blitz around Pimpama to kill larvae in mangroves and tidal inlets in a bid to eradicate them from the city.

The majority of mosquitoes are larvae stage, Cr Tate said, and the council aimed to kill them before they come out.

“”

We’ve got to get in early, we’re going to fight them high, we’re going to fight them on the beaches, and we’re going to fight them in the mangroves. And we’re going to kill them dead.

Mosquitoes pose a public health risk as they can carry and spread debilitating diseases including Ross River virus, dengue and Barmah Forest virus.

Six years ago, almost 700 people on the Gold Coast contracted Ross River virus, which can cause severe inflammation and pain in multiple joints.

Residents are urged to keep an eye on bodies of water on properties and remove them where possible to stamp out “breeding grounds” for  mozzies.
