A truck driver has been sentenced after crashing into a motorcyclist in Sydney’s west, with the rider’s injuries resulting in a leg amputation.

Brian Maynard, from Lethbridge Park, faced Burwood Local Court on Tuesday where he pleaded guilty to negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm.

Court documents state the 55-year-old was driving a truck along Victoria Rd, Rydalmere about 1.50pm on October 17, 2023.

Traffic came to a halt and the truck slammed into the bike, pushing the victim into the back of the car in front of him.

Maynard came to the rider’s aid after his right leg became “intertwined” in the wreckage, police state.

It took 45 minutes for the victim to be removed from the debris and he was taken to Westmead Hospital.

Maynard told police he tried to stop but the truck brake “felt spongy” and his foot had accidentally fallen onto the accelerator.

The victim had to have his leg amputated above the knee and spent one year in hospital. He is likely to need further surgeries where his left leg may also be removed.

The prosecutor told the court Maynard had been forthcoming with officers since the incident and expressed remorse. He often asked about the victim’s welfare.

Magistrate Chris Halburd said the victim’s life had been “destroyed” and will never be the same.

“This is something the defendant will also have to deal with for the rest of his life,” he added.

Mr Halburd acknowledged there were issues with the brakes, Maynard’s early guilty plea and his limited criminal record.

Maynard was sentenced to a two-year conditional release order with no conviction recorded.
