A suspended P-plater caught up in a double road fatality, when a speeding motorcyclist crashed into his car, has faced court.
The court has heard that the sheer force of the crash, which killed rider William Brown-Kinsman, 27, and his pillion passenger Doey Choi, 24, saw the car roll onto its roof and injure driver Bilal Kanj.
Kanj, from Regents Park, faced Burwood Local Court on Tuesday where he pleaded guilty to driving while his licence was suspended.
Court documents state the 26-year-old was turning right onto Worth St off the Hume Highway near Greenacre about 8pm on May 28 last year.
Mr Brown-Kinsman was carrying pillion passenger Ms Choi and travelling north along the highway with a group of other bike riders when they approached Kanj’s Toyota Corolla.
Police estimate the bike was travelling more than 149km/h when it “heavily” crashed into the car causing both riders to fall onto the road and the Toyota rolled onto its roof.
Brown-Kinsman and Choi died on the scene and Kanj was taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition, the police facts state.
Police checks revealed Kanj had a suspended driver’s licence.
The facts state that Kanj was not responsible for the crash as the motorbike rider was travelling over the speed limit.
Magistrate Jennifer Price said Kanj was injured from the crash and had to spend a lengthy period in hospital.
She said Kanj had a poor driving record and disqualified him from holding a driver’s licence for one month with a conviction recorded.
