A teenager linked to a stolen Lexus after police examined CCTV at a Red Rooster drive through has escaped without a conviction.

A TEENAGER will have to complete 100 hours of community service but managed to avoid conviction after driving stolen vehicles while unlicensed.

Thomas Craig Grundy, 18, pleaded guilty in the Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday to 20 offences including four counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, driving without a licence disqualified by a court order, and property offences.

The court heard his “unbroken” two-month crime spree started just two weeks after he turned 18 on April 30.

Senior Constable Lewis Butterfield said: “There were a number of those (offences) where the defendant is seen driving stolen vehicles. In one circumstance, (he) was actually hiding from police in a cupboard and then located with keys for a stolen vehicle that he was observed driving.”

The Bulletin has previously revealed police found a stolen Lexus outside of an Ashmore property on June 14.

Police officers allegedly found footage of Grundy behind the wheel of the stolen car going through a Red Rooster drive-through.

Solicitor Rachel Barnes told the court it was not suggested he stole the cars, only that he was unlawfully using them.

She said Grundy had a troubled upbringing. She said he should be given the full benefit of being sentenced as a youthful offender.

Grundy had already spent 25 days in custody.

He was ordered to complete 100 hours of community service and his licence was disqualified for two years.

A conviction was not recorded.
