POLICE have pounced on two men who allegedly burst through a glass door armed with a machete and bat in a brazen armed hold-up at a Gold Coast watering hole.

However, one more suspect remains at large and out of the grasp of Gold Coast Police after the terrifying raid at Coomera Lodge Hotel just before midnight on September 7.

A Queensland Police spokesman revealed a 31-year-old Varsity Lakes man and a 20-year-old Nerang man have been charged with a range of offences, including armed robbery, enter premises to commit indictable offence, going armed to cause fear and wilful damage.

The Varsity Lakes man is due to face Southport Magistrates Court on October 8, while the Nerang man is due to face the court on October 29.

It’s alleged the pair smashed through a glass door to access a gaming room after the hotel was closed, but while workers were still finishing up for the night.

Police allege the armed men confronted a 48-year-old staff member, demanding he empty the contents of cash register into a bag they were carrying.

“The men fled the hotel with the money and were seen to get into a stolen 2005 Nissan Navara with Queensland registration plates 504 ZYO,” a police spokesman said.

“No one was physically injured in the incident.”

It’s not the first time the Upper Coomera hotel has been targeted by armed robbers.

Two staff members were leaving for the night when two men wearing balaclavas confronted them with a silver pistol in 2010.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Procter said at the time workers were marched out the back through the tavern manager’s office.

“Once in the office the men began tying up one employee and forced the manager to open the safe and hand over his keys and phone,” he said.

“The manager was then tied up and the offenders waited about 10 minutes for the safe, which was on time delay, to open.

It's alleged the men were armed with a machete and bat during the robbery.

“They escaped with a large sum of cash in the manager’s car which was found the following day.”

In 2011, a woman was charged after she shot a family friend at Pacific Pines following a smash-and-grab robbery of the hotel.

Six years later the hotel was again involved in a terrifying raid when it was alleged three men wearing balaclavas, one armed with a firearm, forced their way into the Maudsland St business.

Two employees, a 49-year-old woman and a 62-year-old man, were allegedly threatened before the trio fled with a sum of cash.

Australian Venue Co, which owns the hotel, did not provide further comment shortly after the latest robbery because the “investigation is in the hands of the Queensland Police Service”.
