There was a strange scene outside Southport Courthouse today after police blockaded a street.

“WHERE are the people?”
That was the question asked by more than one person in an empty but closed street at the front of Southport court this morning.
Police had blocked off the short road in anticipation of large number of people on the court list.

The closed road would allow people to wait outside so people in the court house could apply the coronavirus social distancing requirements.

But this morning the court was quiet with about 100 people on the list.
The court list is shorter today than it was on Friday.
Sources have told the Bulletin the street was closed this morning as a “trial run” ahead of larger lists later in the week.
Magistrates have flagged repeatedly that Tuesday and Wednesday will be exceptionally busy this week.

A small area near Rosies in Mal Burke car park will be roped off from Wednesday for people in court one to check in before heading into the court house.

Inside the court rooms there are limits of the number people in the gallery and people must sit at least one seat apart.
Police will continue to close the road on weekdays from 8am to midday until July 10.
