A Gold Coast man accused of robbing and assaulting a pizza delivery driver has been ordered to avoid drugs and alcohol as part of bail conditions.

A MAN accused of assaulting and robbing a pizza delivery rider must not consume drugs or alcohol as part of bail conditions.

Corey John Ambler, 22, who is charged with armed robbery and stealing, must steer clear of any substances, and must undergo testing if directed.

Magistrate Michelle Dooley said testing was important as it “appears to have been a major part of this offending”.

She also took into account his age.

“You can tell him that this is a one-off chance, I’m quite sure,” she told solicitor Ethel Ndombi, of Legal Aid Queensland.

Ambler’s bail application was heard in Southport Magistrates Court in his absence.

Police have alleged an 18-year-old pizza delivery driver was robbed and assaulted in Southport about 7pm Monday.

The alleged victim was a pizza delivery driver.

Prosecutor Donn Reid said the alleged victim suffered “visible bruising” and an abrasion from where they were struck with a wooden pole.

“It’s a random attack on a member of the public,” Mr Reid said.

He said the alleged victim fled and threw money to stop being chased.

Ms Ndombi, who conceded the charge was serious, said Ambler had never been in custody before, and it appeared the alleged offending was “out of character” and perhaps fuelled by either drugs or alcohol.

Ambler must also report to police, remain with his father and abide by a curfew as part of his bail conditions.

The matter was adjourned to July 23.
