Domestic violence: Partner violently attacked and threatened to kill partner over soft drink

A woman suffered cuts and bruises after her partner punched, strangled her with a seatbelt and threatened to kill her if she went to the cops because a store didn’t have a particular soft drink, police allege.

A WOMAN suffered cuts and bruises after her partner punched and strangled her with a seatbelt before threatening to kill her if she went to the cops because a store didn’t have a particular soft drink, police allege.

The horrifying ordeal played out in the middle of Byron Bay on Tuesday after the pair went to get some food.

New South Wales police allege the woman, 24, who had been in a relationship with the accused for six months, was repeatedly punched, strangled with a seat belt, and had her clothing slashed with a knife.

Police allege the ordeal began when the accused gave the woman $10 and asked for a Coke from the store.

But when they didn’t have it, and she instead returned with food and returned the money, the man allegedly punched her multiple times in the arm.

He allegedly directed her to Suffolk Park and continued to be “abusive” and threatened to “bash” her.

As they drove the man grabbed her seat belt and used it to strangle her for about 10 seconds, police allege.

After he released it the man punched the woman in the upper arm about five times, police allege.

Police said the woman at one point got out of the vehicle.

But when she returned the “irate” man allegedly kicked the inside of the car causing the passenger side airbag panel to come off.

He also allegedly caused damage to her phone and gear stick.

Police allege the man then pulled out a knife and cut the woman’s clothing exposing her bra.

It’s alleged she was screaming at the man to stop and told him she was driving to the police station.

Police allege the man punched the victim again in the arm and threatened to kill her if she did.

The alleged victim then drove to the Main Beach car park and stopped where she was approached by a stranger.

Police said she told the man what happened.

The woman’s partner fled towards the beach but was arrested on Friday.

A 24-year-old man has since been charged with a string of offences including resist police, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, intentionally choke, malicious damage, use offensive weapon to commit indictable offence, intimidation and custody of a knife.

He was granted bail and is due to appear in Byron Bay Court on July 27.
