A HOMELESS man has been sentenced to jail for spitting in a police officer’s face, threatening to kill bank staff, theft, burnouts, punching a bus, and defecating on the floor of a jail cell.

Carlos Edmund Petric, also known as Carlos Edmund Gomes, appeared by videolink from jail in the Southport Magistrates Court.

He pleaded guilty to 13 charges including serious assault, stealing and trespass.

The court was told Petric racked up the charges between December last year and March 24.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Erin Livingstone said the most serious offence was committed at blue-chip suburb Main Beach on February 15 when police responded to reports a man was screaming to himself.

Sgt Livingstone said Petric, who appeared to be falling asleep while the facts were being read out, picked up sticks and used them as weapons, verbally abused police and when detained for an emergency examination, he spat in an officer’s face, hitting a constable near the eye.

The court was told during the three-month period of offending, Petric damaged a security camera and water bubbler at Surfers Paradise, did a burnout in his ute near Waxy’s Irish Pub, stole a Segway from a Broadbeach Waters retail store, an electric bike from an Uber Eats delivery driver and a cash register from a Surfers Paradise hotel.

He punched a bus after stepping out in front of it and smashed the windscreen, defecated on a jail cell floor and spread it on the walls with his hands and threatened to kill staff at a Chevron Island bank.

Magistrate Joan White said she accepted Petric did not recollect the assault on the police and officer and understood he was “in a bad place at the time”, but it was no excuse.

“I also take into account you’ve spent, all up, 59 days in custody,” Ms White said.
