A cheese worker has escaped jail time for tailgating the driver of a Mazda hatchback and shattering the windscreen with a metal pole.

The driver was picking bits of shattered glass from her legs days after the April 2020 attack.

Bodhi Jack Allen Pinnell also threatened police with a sword and a bowie knife when they tried to speak to him at his Southport home weeks later.

When police stopped him at a traffic stop in Bundall a few months later, Pinnell pushed police away from the car and sped off along Racecourse Road.

The 28-year-old claimed his actions were because he had a phobia of police.

Pinnell pleaded guilty in the Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday to going armed to cause fear, common assault, wilful damage, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and escaping lawful custody.

Magistrate Kay Philipson sentenced him to six months’ prison with immediate parole release, 18 months probation and disqualified him from driving for six months.

Outside of court, Pinnell told female reporters: “I hope you get killed, I hope you get hit by a car, I hope you get raped.”

Magistrate Philipson said his police phobia did not excuse the attack on the woman.

“You consider you are scared, imagine how she must have felt?,” she said.

“She would have been fearing for her life.”

Police prosecutor Sergeant Glenn Whittle said the woman was driving in Bundall on April 29 last year when she noticed Pinnell tailgating her.

When she turned on to Racecourse Rd, Pinnell overtook her, almost crashed into a car in another lane, swerved in front of her and stopped abruptly.

He then got out of his hatchback, took a 1m long, thick metal pole from his car, hit the bonnet twice before bringing it up over his shoulder and aiming it at her head through the windscreen.

Pinnell drove off and witnesses came to help the woman.

Sgt Whittle said police tried to speak to Pinnell at his home on June 17 but he picked up a bowie knife and sword and said he would defend his home.

They left and an arrest warrant was later issued.

On September 23 last year, Pinnell was stopped as part of a routine licence check.

When he was told he was under arrest, he pushed police officers away and drove off.

When police arrested him later he claimed he feared for his life as “one of the officers was eyeballing me”.

Defence lawyer Ross Oden said Pinnell had a phobia of police and gets extremely agitated when he hears sirens.

He said Pinnell works full-time at a Burleigh Heads cheese company.
