A random attack at a Gold Coast tram station has left a teen battered and bruised.

The 17-year-old had gotten off at the G-Link at Helensvale on Sunday night when she realised she had forgotten her phone.

Police allege the girl returned to the tram to retrieve her phone but was then confronted by three girls – a 15-year-old and two 16-year-olds.

Gold Coast Police Acting Superintendent Scott Knowles told ABC radio: “They followed her to the steps where they have assaulted her.

“They have jumped on to the tram to Southport.

“Thankfully, the G-Link staff have kept a track of it all.”

He said the three girls had been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm.

“The young girl obviously was shaken up by the incident, which was totally understandable,” he said.

“It’s really concerning they can be attacked like this by young girls.”

Supt Knowles said there was “no apparent reason” for the attack.

It is believed the girls had travelled from Redcliffe and Brisbane on the heavy rail.
