Yingying Xu: New psychiatric report commissioned into murder accused’s state of mind

A second psychiatric report into the state of mind of Yingying Xu, who allegedly murdered daughter Sophie Wang has been ordered amid uncertainty on whether it will be heard in criminal court.

Defence lawyers for a Gold Coast woman charged with murdering her daughter, a beloved year 5 schoolgirl, are awaiting a second psychiatric report into their client amid ongoing uncertainty as to whether the prosecution will proceed through the criminal system.

Yingying Xu, 47, is charged with murdering her 10-year-old daughter Sophie Wang, a popular and hardworking student of Emmanuel College, at the family’s Emerald Lakes, Carrara home on August 13 last year.

Sophie’s body was allegedly discovered by her father, Dr Yun Wang.

Her death led to public outpourings of grief via vigils and other memorials, and rocked the tight-knit school community.

On Friday, the court was told Legal Aid Queensland were now handling Ms Xu’s matter, and a four-month adjournment was requested, and granted, to allow the completion of a second psychiatric report into the defendant’s state of mind.

The court previously heard the prosecution had been suspended after the first psychiatric report recommended Ms Xu’s matter be transferred to the Mental Health Court.

In the wake of Sophie’s death, bizarre Tiktok videos circulated, purportedly uploaded by Ms Xu, in which she railed against Satanic spirits within her soul.
