Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of a man’s outburst at Tallebudgera Creek, with video of his protracted efforts to evade capture being viewed online millions of times.
In a statement, Queensland Police Service confirmed they responded to reports of a “disturbance” at Palm Beach about 10am Friday, February 28.
“Police were called to Murlong Crescent following a report that a man was behaving erratically in the water,” a spokeswoman said.
“Upon arrival, police tried to engage the man and assist him; however, he was unwilling to co-operate with police.
“After several attempts to assist the man, he was eventually taken into police custody.”
The man has not been charged with any offences.
Footage depicting the incident circulated widely on video sharing platform Tiktok, with at least 2.3 million people viewing the clip at the time of writing.
The video appears to depict the man swinging several punches as he grapples with two officers on the beach, before he flees towards the safety of the water.
As he runs, one of the officers produces a taser and aims it in his direction, although it was unclear whether the device was fired.
Once in the water, the man is shepherded by a police officer on a jetski, with additional support provided by a surf life saving vessel.
Eventually, the man latches onto the back of the surf life saving craft, which tows him to shore and into the arms of waiting police, who arrest the man.
9News reported the man evaded capture in the water for up to three hours before giving up the ghost.
