A woman has been taken to hospital with a cut to her hand after an incident that saw specialist police descend on a Gold Coast unit block, fearing that a man was holed up inside with a knife.

Emergency services were called to the Southport complex at about 11.30am on Tuesday.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson said a woman in her sixties was assessed by paramedics at the scene and taken to Gold Coast University Hospital with an injury to her hand.

Concerned that the man allegedly responsible was still inside the complex, specialist police were called to the scene.

They remained until about 4pm when it was established the man was not present.

“Shortly before 12 o’clock today we responded here in relation to a 45-year-old male with some personal issues,” Senior Sergeant Robert Dusha said.

“At that stage we believed he might have been inside with a knife.

“We subsequently established that he’s not inside that building and he departed prior to police arriving.”

Snr Sgt Dusha said the injured woman had a cut to her hand. It is believed the woman and the alleged assailant are known to each other.

“She has a cut to her hand which is non life-threatening. She’s safe at the hospital.

“... He (the alleged assailant) doesn’t pose any known risk to the community.

“Our goal is to make sure he is brought safely into custody.”
