Snooker World at Mermaid Beach remains closed more than a week after alleged copper theft

A Gold Coast business remains shut more than a week after the alleged break-in, with a man now charged and due to face court.

A man has been charged after an alleged break-in at a Gold Coast business that bosses claim has left them unable to trade.

Mermaid Beach’s Snooker World remains closed this weekend as electrical crews work to restore power, more than a week after someone allegedly broke into the Gold Coast Highway site and stole copper from the mains wiring.

A Snooker World spokesperson said shortly after the alleged theft that it was a “devastating blow” following their recent upgrades and relaunch.

“We don’t know as yet for how long or if any temporary power solutions can be put in place as an interim measure,” they said.

“All we know is it requires extensive electrical works to rebuild and reconnect the mains power.”

“The business has never been better or busier. Combine the timing with Easter holidays and a schedule of large-planned events every weekend for the next month and it’s heartbreaking for everyone involved.”

An update posted to Snooker World’s Facebook page on Friday morning said the venue would reopen when it was “fully operational and completely safe for customers and staff”.

A 42-year-old Canungra man has since been charged with one count each of enter premises and commit indictable offence, unlawful possession of suspected stolen property, and possession of a knife in a public place.

He is due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on April 22.
