A shocking apparent road rage incident has unfolded on the Gold Coast, with a man seen clinging to the bonnet of a moving car as the driver continued down a busy road.

The dramatic scene took place around 2.47pm on Friday, March 28, along Oxley Drive before the Jabiru Island Bridge, heading toward Hope Island.

Footage captured by a passing motorist showed a white 4WD moving forward with the man gripping the bonnet, shouting at the driver.

Moments later, the driver slows down, and the man jumps off, punches the car’s rear-view mirror, and runs against oncoming traffic.

The witness said the driver carried the man for nearly a kilometre across Jabiru Island before he finally dismounted.

The man was then seen walking back to his vehicle – left parked in the middle of the road – taking five minutes to “blow off steam.”

The witness, who was three cars behind when the incident occurred, said the conflict seemed to stem from a failed merge.

“I didn’t see anything except them trying to merge into the lane practically side-by-side, blind to one another,” he said.

He added: “Road etiquette just doesn’t exist in Queensland anymore.”

A police spokesman confirmed the incident had not been formally reported but reiterated general safety advice for drivers who encounter aggressive motorists.

“If you are being followed or encounter an aggressive motorist, drive to a populated area or police station to seek assistance and report.

“It is best not to agitate an aggressive motorist by returning abuse or antagonising gestures.

Authorities also urged motorists to take precautions such as installing dashcams, keeping vehicle doors locked at traffic stops, and remaining aware of their surroundings.

“Anyone who witnesses dangerous driving or feels threatened on the road should contact police on triple-0 (000) in an emergency.”
