The three members of the same family who police say were variously shot and stabbed by a man at Surfers Paradise in the early hours of Monday have been identified.
Logan Ihaka, 44, and his sons Jahreez Ihaka, 23, and Kaden Murray, 21, were all rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital after reportedly being attacked at a Peninsular Dr unit block about 2am Monday.
Police are searching for 30-year-old Mitchell Barnes, who they suspect of involvement in the attack.
Officers are investigating reports Barnes was having a domestic dispute with his 38-year-old partner when Mr Ihaka, who lives alongside his family in a unit below the arguing couple, asked them to quieten down as he had work the following morning.
According to police, a confrontation ensued, involving the firing of a revolver, that would leave Mr Ihaka and Kaden critically wounded, and Jahreez bearing his own injuries.
Moana Murray, Mr Ihaka’s partner and mother to Jahreez and Kaden, said she was on the phone to triple-0 when the confrontation occurred, and so didn’t realise that downstairs, her family’s life was in grievous danger.
Once she made it downstairs, she was greeted with a “horrific scene”.
“I just saw blood everywhere,” Ms Murray said.
“My partner got up and I didn’t know how bad the situation was, but he was holding his neck and then he fell to the ground.
“I was pretty hysterical on the phone to triple-0.
“It was like a light seeing them [emergency services] coming down the driveway with their bags to help my partner and my son, honest to God saving their lives.”
Ms Murray also praised her “beautiful neighbours” who came running with towels.
“It was on the brink. If it wasn’t for our neighbours, I believe my partner and son would have bled out. I’m so grateful to these people.
“The police officers, the paramedics, the Gold Coast (University) Hospital staff were all just amazing.”
Ms Murray said Jahreez had been discharged from hospital, while Kaden remained in hospital but had been moved from the intensive care unit, following a six-hour surgery on Monday.
Mr Ihaka had also been operated on, and was meeting further with surgeons on Tuesday afternoon to assess his condition.
She said the knife had pierced Mr Ihaka’s windpipe and he had lacerations to his head.
“All he cared about when he was on the ground holding his neck was ‘save my son, save my son, save my son’,” she said.
“He’s in immense pain - it’s hard to watch.”
An online fundraiser established by family friend Kim Lindsay had raised more than $12,000 at the time of writing.
Ms Lindsay described Mr Ihaka as being known for his “witty sense of humour, cheeky smile and laugh, and his genuine kindness”.
“We are unsure what the road to recovery looks like and how long this may take,” she said.
“This feels so cruel to happen to someone so kind-hearted. No one deserves this to happen to them.”
Police continue to search for Barnes and his partner, who is not alleged to have been involved in the confrontation but is wanted for questioning about the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
Barnes was last seen driving a black Toyota Camry bearing New South Wales registration plates DL 48 YW in the vicinity of Gold Coast University Hospital at about 6am Monday.
Police believe he may have sustained a skull laceration and broken arm in the confrontation and would require medical attention.
