Pair arrested after alleged dangerous dash on electric motorbike

Police have expressed frustration over an alleged joy ride on an electric motorbike.

Gold Coast police have pounced on two males accused of going on an alleged dangerous dash with an electric motorbike across a busy highway.

The duo came to the attention of officers about 1am on Saturday morning as they were travelling along the Gold Coast highway near Southport.

“An e-bike was detected committing a series of traffic offences, such as popping wheelies and doing monos and travelling at an excessive speed – in excess of 120 kilometres an hour over the Sundale Bridge,” Acting Superintendent Jason Tuffley said.

“That triggered a response for our highway patrol officers to attend that scene. Police attempted to intercept that bike. Approximately 400 metres south of Sundale Bridge that bike ran out of battery and the two offenders were then quickly rounded up.”

Police have not laid any charges at this stage.

The weekend’s alleged joy ride is the latest in an increasing scourge of e-bikes running riot across Gold Coast streets, according to Acting Superintendent Tuffley.

“The issue is that they are not registered, insured. The riders are typically juveniles, who are not licensed or qualified to operate a motor vehicle that travels at that speed on the roads,” he said.

“Once they (rider) fail to stop, it’s not in police or community interest to continue to conduct a pursuit with somebody that’s a juvenile operating these vehicles – so that’s the challenge.”

He urged parents to conduct thorough research into electric motorbikes before making a decision to purchase one for a their children.

“There’s a lack of education, a lack of understanding, a lack of appreciation for what these devices and vehicles can do,” Mr Tuffley said.
