A former age group State of Origin player who is accused of a fatal one-punch in Surfers Paradise allegedly lashed out because the man had assaulted his wife, a court has been told.

Oshae Jackson Tuiasau allegedly struck Toro George once in the face on View Ave, Surfers Paradise about 4am on December 19 last year.

Mr George was knocked unconscious. He died in hospital days later.

Youth worker Tuiasau, a member of the 2015 under-20 Queensland Origin side, faced a committal hearing in the Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with unlawful striking causing death and grievous bodily harm.

The court was played CCTV footage of the attack which showed a group of men, including Tuiasau and Mr George walking down the street.

They appear to be speaking amiably and Mr George leans over another man coming closer to the man alleged to be Tuiasau, who was wearing a white shirt.

It was then the man in the white shirt struck Mr George who immediately fell to the ground.

Junior Marsters, who was related to Mr George and knew Tuiasau from school, told the court he was talking to Tuiasau when there was a disturbance on the dancefloor of a Surfers Paradise nightclub.

He said the pair went to find out what happened.

Mr Marsters said they were told Mr George had allegedly assaulted Tuiasau’s wife.

He said Tuiasau agreed to get everyone in his group and discuss the matter outside.

Mr Marsters said outside the club there was “pushing and shoving” but Tuiasau was trying to calm things down.

The court was told police split the group up and told people to go in different directions.

Mr Marsters said he then spoke to Tuiasau.

“He said let me get him,” he said.

When asked how Tuiasau said it, Mr Marsters said Tuiasau responded “like a normal person”.

The court was told Mr Marsters said to Tuiasau they would “sort it out” meaning they would have a discussion.

Mr Marsters said he and Tuiasau soon met with Mr George and his group and the shook hands.

The court was told Mr George apologised.

Mr Marsters told the court as they were walking down View Ave, Mr George was agitated, and speaking in Cook Island Maori, said he wanted to go back to his brother.

The group were trying to take Mr George back to his hotel.

Mr Marsters said Mr George was expressing his agitation about wanting to go back to him moments before the punch.

Another witness Dylan Thoroughgood said he was just behind the group and was talking to others so did not see the punch.

He said he heard the man in the white shirt say: “You shouldn’t have done that,” after the punch.

The committal hearing was adjourned until January next year as police prosecutions are waiting for a specialist medical report.
