Nissan Skyline R32 stolen from Coast workshop by brazen thief

A FATHER and son mechanic team have been left disheartened after a thief crept into their workshop and stole a customer’s iconic turbo sports car days before Christmas.

Yatala Head Worx and Automotive Servicing owner Jeff Ward and his son Tim were working on the 1989 Nissan Skyline R32 GTS-T in their Old Pacific Hwy workshop when the brazen theft occurred about 10.30am Wednesday.

“It just destroys your faith in the whole human race. I’ve worked for 50 years, I don’t have holidays, I work my guts out – the same as the bloke who owns the car, he’s just like me – and for someone to just come along and take something like this – it’s daylight robbery,” Jeff said.

The thief sped from the shop, with the bonnet still up, as Tim tried to reach through the window and prevent the crook from escaping, leaving him battered and bruised.

The Skyline clipped another vehicle in front of the workshop, which the Wards suspect was driven by an accomplice.

On Thursday, Jeff said he had received reports the Skyline had been spotted and captured on dashcam at Morningside that morning and at Holland Park on Wednesday night.

He felt Queensland Police were not doing enough to return the car to its rightful owner – a car enthusiast who had been upgrading the prized Skyline with his father.

“Police don’t seem to give a damn once they’ve filled the paperwork out. They’re not interested,” he said.

“I rang them last night. I had video from peoples’ Facebook of the car and it was up in Holland Park. The guys were driving it around.”

Jeff said the theft was maddening.

“We want the car back. It’s a really tidy car. It rips your heart out. People put effort into stuff and this happens,” he said.

Nissan Skyline R32s are being sold for tens of thousands of dollars on second-hand vehicle sales websites and are increasingly sough after by motoring enthusiasts.

A Queensland Police spokesperson said officers were “aware of recent sightings within Brisbane and surrounds”.

“Investigations into the theft of a Skyline from a mechanic business at Old Pacific Hwy at Yatala on Wednesday morning continue,” they said.
