Musgrave Ave parked cars smashed: Woman allegedly four times over limit

Police have revealed details of an extraordinary alleged drink driving incident on the Gold Coast that saw parked cars badly damaged before a hunt took place for the driver responsible.

A woman allegedly four times the drink driving limit smashed into parked cars on a Gold Coast street, pushing one 50 metres, before leaving the scene and attempting to hide her car.

Police allege the extraordinary series of events unfolded between 6.55pm and 7.30pm along Musgrave Ave in Southport.

Acting Superintendent Mark Mooney said it was fortunate nobody had been killed in the “extremely dangerous” incident.

“Between 6.55 and 7.30pm on Saturday night a 48-year-old female has travelled along Musgrave Ave in Southport, colliding with several vehicles. This occurred between the Bowls Club near Kumbari Ave and the sports fields.

“She’s then continued west down Musgrave Ave, running a red light, before driving on the wrong side of the road and colliding head on with another parked vehicle.

“She rammed this vehicle approximately 50 metres backwards down Musgrave Ave.”

Police conducted an extensive search for the woman after she allegedly left the scene of the incident.

Acting Supt Mooney said the woman left the scene of the carnage, prompting a search of the area by police.

“Police conducted an extensive search of the area and were able to locate the car parked in an underground car park,” he said.

“The 48-year-old female had hidden the vehicle behind her son’s car. She was later breath tested and returned a positive test four times over the legal limit.”

The woman has been charged with high range drink driving and will appear in the Southport Magistrates Court later this month.

If found guilty penalties include a minimum six-month licence suspension, fines of up to $4334 and imprisonment of up to nine months.

Acting Supt Mooney said it was fortunate the incident had not had a more serious outcome.

“It’s extremely dangerous. We’re lucky no one’s been killed,” he said.

“Drink driving is crazy at the best of times. She was clearly speeding at the same time to have that sort of impact on a vehicle.

“People need to be more careful. And in this day and age you would think someone of her age would know better.”

The incident was the second alleged drink driving offence that caused damage to parked vehicles on the Gold Coast in just hours on Saturday.

At approximately 1.20pm a woman in her eighties crashed her vehicle into a parked car and a light pole at a Pacific Pines car park. She allegedly later blew 0.065.
