Emergency services were kept busy as the Gold Coast copped a deluge of more than 250mm over the weekend, prompting warnings from authorities ahead of more rain tipped this week.
Queensland Police Service Superintendent Brett Jackson said on Sunday at 10.40am a driver was winched to safety after their car became trapped on Mudgeeraba’s Springbrook Rd.
“That driver entered the floodwater unable to see the road surface and that’s the inherent danger of driving through floodwater,” he said.
“That structure can be washed away and that’s where the risk is – vehicles becoming stuck.”
Later that afternoon another driver was forced to wade waist-deep through floodwaters on Helensvale’s Siganto Drive after their vehicle became stranded.
“That in itself is extremely dangerous … our officers responded to that and all things ended well,” Supt Jackson said.
Although no injuries were reported, Supt Jackson issued a warning to drivers.
“As we move into the summer season and with predictions of increased rainfall, we definitely want to reinforce that message of if it’s flooded, definitely forget it,” he said.
Videos of the intense rainfall flooded social media including one that appears to show significant flooding at Movie World at around 1pm on Sunday.
“Movie World turned into Wet ‘n’ Wild,” @thatssomid — captioned his video.
“Oh my god.
“The creek normally fills up with water really quickly but with the torrential downpour it started looking like this.”
Local council crews are working to assess and repair damaged roads, while emergency services remain on high alert for further incidents.
