Hooning on the southern Gold Coast

A notorious hooning gang is taunting residents of a southern Gold Coast suburb who have been forced to deal with sleepless nights and massive skid marks in their streets.

Varsity Lakes residents fear someone will be killed or seriously injured if something is not done.

On Wednesday night residents in the suburb were woken multiple times due to the loud hooning and burnouts being performed in the residential suburb.

The activity left black tyre marks on Lantau Cres which marked almost the entire length of the street.

On Thursday, social media profiles which display links to notorious hoon gang Mexican Hoon Cartel, sent the Bulletin videos of the alleged incidents.

Both profiles used fake names including ‘Pablo Skidscobar’ and ‘EL Slappo’.

One of the profiles even sent screenshots of a Varsity Lakes community group speaking about the hooning.

Those same screenshots were later posted publicly on one of the profiles.

“Way too much garbage been (sic) spoken in these snowflake community pages you are getting hit because you don’t stop talking,” the post said, accompanied by the screenshots and video.

One person commented the hoons were “doing gods (sic) work”.

Another said “Why are they complaining about loud cars?? (sic) I saw a few cars in the driveway that look like they piss off there (sic) neighbours just by turning it on. I’m sure a fat skid and a few crackles to finish it off won’t hurt.”

The Bulletin contacted the profile using the name Pablo Skidscobar but no response was received.

The so-called Mexican Hoon Cartel has been terrorising Gold Coast streets since at least 2018, with many complaints about hooning.

The group regularly posts videos of them completing burnouts, doughnuts and other dangerous driving.
They also have an online merchandise shop.

They have also been known to target people who speak out about them and areas where people complain.

Varsity Lakes resident Robert, who declined to have his last name used due to fear of retribution, said there had been lots of burnouts being done between about 11pm and about 4am almost every day.

“If nobody sees anything or does anything it will carry on until someone gets hurt,” he said.

He said he was getting woken up “a few times a night”.

“It’s starting to become more regular – at least every night or every other night,” he said.

Robert said he had lived in the area for about three years and the hooning had gotten worse in the last four or five months.

Gold Coast Police declined to comment in an effort not to provoke the group.

A spokeswoman said: “Members of the public can report hoon activity in their area by contacting the QPS’ Hoon Hotline on 13HOON (134 666) or making a report online.”
