Mermaid Waters man James Lachlan Smith charged with Varsity Lakes stabbing

A MAN charged with stabbing another man in a suburban Gold Coast street has fronted court for the first time.

James Lachlan Smith appeared in Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday, facing one count each of grievous bodily harm and threatening violence.

Police allege Smith stabbed 20-year-old Riley Vamplew in the abdomen at about 2.30pm Sunday on Willow St, Varsity Lakes.

It is understood Mr Vamplew was in the area to visit a friend when he walked past a man on a pushbike and two other people.

Police claim Mr Vamplew had a brief exchange with a member of the group, during which he was stabbed.

Mr Vamplew was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital, where he has since undergone surgery. He remains in a stable condition.

Smith was charged in relation to the incident on Monday night.

The 23-year-old appeared via videolink from the Southport watchhouse for his brief court appearance on Tuesday, wearing a T-shirt and pants.

Two women shouted messages of support to the Mermaid Waters man from the courtroom gallery, calling out “My boy!” and “Love you!”.

Smith did not make an application for bail and will be remanded in custody until his next court date on April 13.

He is expected to appear via videolink at the next mention.
