A 50-year-old Gold Coast man was found lying on the road covered in blood after police say he jaywalked and was hit by oncoming traffic.

Superintendent Scott Knowles confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that the pedestrian was hit while attempting to cross the street despite traffic lights still green on Tuesday evening.

“At about 6.30 pm last night, a driver of a white Toyota utility was travelling along Marine Parade and as they were going to pass the intersection at Nerang street, a pedestrian walked out in front of the vehicle,” Superintendent Knowles said.

“The pedestrian was struck on the side of the vehicle which then spun off.”

Police attended the incident after a member of the public reported “a bloodied man lying on the roadway” on Tuesday.

Superintendent Knowles said that initially, police believed they were attending a suspected hit and run incident when CCTV footage obtained showed the driver continuing past. However, when police arrived, the driver was found pulled over to the side of the road, had remained at the scene and co-operated with police.

Superintendent Knowles said police had “concluded investigations as far as we are concerned” with regards to the driver but were still looking into whether they would charge the 50 year old man with jaywalking-related offences.

Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics treated the man for head, neck and back injuries, according to a statement.

It was initially reported the man was in a serious condition when he was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital, but his condition was later updated to stable.

“From what I’ve been told, (his injuries) includes lacerations, abrasions, some bruising,” Superintendent Knowles said.

“They’re doing some CT scans to make sure there’s no internal injuries.”

Neither the driver, nor the 50 year old man appeared to be affected by drugs or alcohol Superintendent Knowles added.

He also warned locals and tourists frequenting the CBD against trying to jaywalk.

“Unfortunately these sort of incidents can happen. Fortunately it wasn’t serious this time, but it can certainly lead to death of people,” he said.
