A man accused of threatening police with a gun on the Gold Coast on Tuesday morning has been charged.
The incident occurred as two police officers and members of the public responded to reports of a man slumped over a car on Karen Ave at Mermaid Beach.
They approached him just before 6.30 when the “routine” call-out took a terrifying turn, it has been alleged.
“He held a gun to her throat and was threatening to shoot them,” the source said referring to the responding officers.
“They’ve managed to get him to let her free. He ran down the street. You just don’t expect that sort of sh-t in this job”.
It’s alleged the man ran onto Cronulla Ave where he allegedly threatened several people with the loaded revolver and attempted to steal their vehicles.
One victim was pulling up at a mechanics when he was approached by the offender and had the gun allegedly pointed at his head through the window.
Speaking at the crime scene following the incident, Inspector Kayleen James alleged the man then attempted to try and take a taxi driver’s car.
“Police were further called. They spoke with the male person who struggled with police and he was immediately taken into custody,” inspector James said.
“I can confirm he grabbed an officer. He was in possession of a firearm at the time and, yes he had threatened both of the officers with that firearm,” Inspector James alleged.
Several witnesses reported hearing gunshots in the vicinity at the time, and police sources said there were rounds missing from the gun when it was discovered not far from the scene.
No one was injured during the stand-off but paramedics assessed three patients.
Inspector James confirmed the female officer that was allegedly threatened has been taken to Gold Coast University Hospital for ‘preventive’ treatment.
“She is an experienced and trained officer and the QPS are providing all of the support we can for the officer that were involved”.
“I am very proud of the officer’s actions here today. It was very confronting situation and they handled it with great experience and knowledge”.
An entire block was cordoned off by police for much of the morning on Tuesday with forensic teams taking finger prints from a number of cars. Detective seized CCTV from businesses and spoke with witnesses.
The Currumbin Waters man has been charged with two counts each of serious assault police, obstruct police and deprivation of liberty, four counts of dangerous conduct with a weapon and one count each of unlawful entry of vehicle for committing indictable offence whilst armed, attempted unlawful entry of vehicle for committing indictable offence whilst armed, unlawful possession of weapons category D/H/R weapon – firearm used to commit indictable offence, authority required to possess explosives (ammunition) and contravene requirement.
He is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
