A man was busted drink-driving on his P-plates after downing eight Vodka Cruisers and later getting behind the wheel to visit his girlfriend.

Lyric Stanton Thompson, 23, pleaded guilty to mid-range drink-driving in Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

He was more than twice the legal limit (0.05) – recording a blood alcohol reading of 0.109.

The court was told police pulled over the asbestos removalist at 7.15am on August 7 for a roadside breath test after suspecting he was drunk.

Thompson told Magistrate Michelle Dooley he did not know what the legal limit was, but admitted to knowing he should not drink and drive.

His solicitor told the court he had been at a function the night before, which finished around midnight, and chose to drive because he wanted to see his girlfriend.

He had completed a Queensland traffic offenders program, the lawyer said.

Magistrate Dooley disqualified Thompson from driving for four months and slapped him with a $550 fine.

A conviction was recorded.
