A woman who assaulted a Miss World Australia and also a young model claims she thought the latter was the same person, a court has heard.

Lisa Eve Hartley, 47, pleaded guilty in the Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday to two counts of common assault in a public place while adversely affected by intoxicating substances.

The assaults at Southport Park shopping centre came after Miss World Australia Jasmine Stringer hosted a catwalk class for aspiring pageant contestants on May 17, 2024.

The court heard at 6.49pm Adelaide model Stevie Hearl exited the centre before she was approached by Hartley who accused her of filming.

Ms Hearl advised Hartley she wasn’t filming and was on a Facetime call.

Harley continued to follow Ms Hearl despite the now Miss Tourism Australia winner moving away from her.

The court heard Ms Hearl walked towards Hartley and said “you’ve really pissed me off” before Hartley hit her in the head.

The court heard a melee occurred involving Hartley and three witnesses who confronted her.

Hartley pushed one of the witnesses and was struck by another. Hartley is not charged in relation to this altercation.

Police prosecutor Rodney Keyte told the court CCTV footage later played in court, shows Ms Hearl approaching the altercation holding a phone to capture it before Hartley grabbed hold of her hair.

The court heard Hartley was punched by witnesses and fell to the ground while still pulling Ms Hearl’s hair.

The altercation was interrupted by a passer-by who pulled a witness off of Hartley.

Ms Hearl managed to escape and left in an Uber while Hartley returned to a bench she had been sitting on prior to the assault.

A witness called Ms Stringer and told her Ms Hearl had been assaulted.

Ms Stringer left the shopping centre at 6.53pm, met with witnesses and told them they needed to leave.

As Ms Stringer started walking towards the pedestrian crossing, she heard Hartley say “I’m going to charge you”.

When she turned around, she saw Hartley running towards her, yelling abuse.

Ms String lifted her hands to defend herself as Hartley struck her right forearm while yelling.

Hartley walked away and Ms Stringer got inside her car to call triple-0.

The court heard police found Hartley with shopping centre security around 7.11pm and she was issued with a public nuisance charge, since dropped.

Hartley admitted in an interview with police she had drunk Jack Daniels beforehand, and admitted being involved, but she did not remember anything other than attending the location to get milk and dinner before being assaulted by the public and police taking her home.

Hartley told police this was due to concussion she suffered on the night and she did not remember assaulting anyone.

In court, Hartley, representing herself, said she had not drunk since and believed Ms Hearl was showing-off in front of friends.

Magistrate Louisa Pink told her: “I’ve got to tell you, from what I saw, you were the one pursuing her.

“She can show-off in front of whoever she wants without being assaulted in a public place by someone whose drunk.”

Hartley told the court she thought Ms Stringer was Ms Hearl when she assaulted her.

“That was an absolute mistake. All of it was,” she said.

Hartley said she had back injuries from the melee but could not provide a medical certificate to prove that or the concussion.

Ms Pink took into account her guilty plea but said Hartley had assaulted two women unprovoked.

“These are people going about their business peacefully until they were assaulted by you.”

Despite Hartley telling police she could not remember it, Magistrate Pink said: “Today you’ve said all sorts of things that seems to me to indicate you have a memory.”

Hartley was sentenced to 12 month community service order and must complete 80 hours of community service

No conviction was recorded.
