The Gold Coast woman charged with manslaughter following a horrific triple-fatal crash could spend much of her lengthy court battle behind bars.
Uiatu “Joan” Taufua – the mother of NRL star Payne Haas – was not required to appear in person when her matter was mentioned in Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
The 46-year-old was charged with three counts of manslaughter and one each of dangerous operation of a vehicle, evading police, and unlicensed driving.
It was alleged Taufua was seen driving dangerously and sped away from police shortly before colliding with another vehicle on Bonogin Rd, Bonogin on December 30.
Retired doctor Chris Fawcett, his partner Susan Zimmer, and her daughter Steffanie Zimmer all died at the scene of the crash.
Taufua was the sole survivor.
She was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital with serious injuries, where she remained under police guard before being transported to the Southport watch house last week.
The Bonogin woman’s parole was cancelled last Wednesday and she was moved to Brisbane Women’s Correctional Centre.
Her matter was listed for a bail application on Wednesday, but defence lawyer Leigh Johnson instead withdrew the application and asked for a lengthy adjournment.
Speaking outside the Southport courthouse, Ms Johnson said there was “no point” in applying for her client’s bail while still awaiting the briefs of evidence.
“I saw her yesterday - she’s doing as well as can be expected, (and) still has injuries she’s recovering from,” she said.
“She’s got a broken arm (and) a broken sternum.”
Ms Johnson would not comment on whether members of Taufua’s family had visited her in jail.
Taufua will be remanded in custody and her matter will next be mentioned in March.
