A man who allegedly ploughed into a secured estate gate in a stolen vehicle and then tried to flee from police has claimed he has almost no recollection of the incident.

Christopher Edward Silk was charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle, entering dwelling with intent, stealing, entering a dwelling and committing an indictable offence, receiving tainted property, and breaching bail.

Police say a security guard alerted officers to a “suspicious” Holden Cruze near a convenience store at Masthead Way in Hope Island about 11pm Tuesday.

The car was allegedly stolen from a Burpengary East home the previous night.

Police allege Silk was driving the vehicle and sped off when he was approached by officers.

The 39-year-old Rothwell man allegedly crashed into a nearby estate entrance gate and continued on to Sanctuary Cove, with police using stingers to eventually stop the car on Santa Barbara Blvd.

It is alleged Silk then fled on foot, but was soon found by the dog squad hiding in the garage of a nearby home.

Silk represented himself when his matter was mentioned in Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday, appearing via videolink from the police watch house.

Police prosecutor Karen Friedrichs said Silk was due to be sentenced on several outstanding charges in Brisbane in March, and could now have his parole suspended.

The court was told Silk’s fingerprints were allegedly found at the scene of a bizarre break-in in Burpengary in the weeks leading up to his arrest.

Intruders allegedly broke into a rental property and removed tap and showerheads to flood the home, and removed other household objects such as remote controls and light fittings.

Silk claimed he had little memory of the alleged incidents.

“Two days ago I was riding my motorbike, and next thing I woke up in a motel … I don’t know anything that’s happened since then,” Silk said.

“I don’t feel f**king right, there’s something wrong with me.”

Silk did not apply for bail.

He will be remanded in custody and his matter was adjourned to February 1.

Man spotted by police crashes into estate gate in allegedly stolen car

A man has been arrested after going on a joy ride in an allegedly stolen car, causing major damage across the Gold Coast, including smashing into a secured estate gate.

Gold Coast police said around 11pm on Tuesday a security officer alerted police to a suspicious grey Holden Cruze near a convenience store at Masthead Way in Hope Island.

When police arrived on the scene and approached the car, the 39-year-old Rothwell driver sped off and crashed into an estate entrance gate, causing major damage.

Police allege the car was stolen from a Burpengary East resident between 11.10pm on January 9 and 9.10am on January 10.

Police tracked the car to Sanctuary Cove and deployed a tyre deflation device around Santa Barbara Boulevard.

The 39-year-old man ran from the car on foot and was found by the dog squad at a nearby address in a garage.

The Rothwell man was charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle, enter dwelling with intent, enter dwelling and commit indictable offence, stealing and receiving tainted property.

He will appear at Southport Magistrates Court today.

Another man, who was understood to be in the car, was found by police as he was trying to get into a ride share near the residence where the Rothwell man was found.

Police investigations are continuing into the second man.
