A man charged with a horror alleged knife attack on a shopping centre security guard was facing numerous other charges at the time including indecent treatment of children, a court has been told.

Kai Matthew Collins appeared in Southport Magistrates Court this week for the second time since the alleged stabbing at Westfield Helensvale on August 25.

The 19-year-old was allegedly one of three teenagers who set upon champion bodybuilder and veteran security guard Johnny Whenuaroa outside the shopping centre.

It is alleged one of the teens was armed with a knife.

Mr Whenuaroa was left fighting for his life, with bystanders racing into nearby shops to grab first-aid supplies in a desperate effort to help. He was hospitalised in a serious but stable condition.

The group allegedly fled the scene in a stolen Holden Trax, which police say was stolen at knifepoint from a woman in a car park at Mount Warren the day before the alleged stabbing.

Mr Collins was arrested and charged with several offences including attempted murder, going armed so as to cause fear, robbery with violence, and breaching bail. He has been held in custody since his arrest.

The Oxenford man did not appear in person when his case was briefly mentioned in court this week.

Defence lawyer Vered Turner, of Vered Turner Lawyers, told the court the 19-year-old was also charged with indecent treatment of children and asked for a full brief of evidence on all charges.

Mr Collins was remanded in custody with his case to return to court on October 31.

Magistrate Jane Bentley noted on the file that all bail had been revoked.

Ms Turner said this week that no new application for bail would be made.

Court documents reveal Mr Collins was charged with a dozen counts of indecent treatment of a child under 16 – related to three children – dated between January 1 and July 14.

He is also charged with making and possessing child exploitation material within the same period.

The 19-year-old also faces numerous charges of fraud, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and breaching unrelated bail orders.

Mr Collins has not yet entered a plea.

A 17-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl were also charged with attempted murder after the attack on Mr Whenuaroa and have since appeared in Southport Childrens Court.
