The partner of a man who drowned at the Paradise Point parklands swimming enclosure on Sunday has taken to social media to pay tribute to the 29-year-old.
Gold Coaster Jake Brown died when he failed to resurface after entering the water, with police saying it was believed he was sitting on the edge of netting and fell backwards.
In comments on social media on Monday, Karma Robinson said Mr Brown was much loved by family and friends.
“This is my partner. His name is Jake Brown he was not just a man he was a very very loved friend partner father brother son grandson uncle,” she said.
“He was a beautiful man whose smile lit up every room he walked in – unfortunately we lost a beautiful human.”
Superintendent Peter Miles from Gold Coast police said emergency services were called to the incident at about 4pm on Sunday after reports a young girl had gone over the edge of the net and failed to resurface.
“As it turned out, it was a 29-year-old male,” he said.
“It appears the male who was sitting on the boundary of the netting of the man-made pool area, he’s fallen backwards and then was not seen to pop back up.”
Police found Mr Brown’s body four hours after he went missing following a frantic search including water police, Polair and the dive squad.
Investigations into the cause of his drowning are continuing, with a report for the coroner to be prepared.
Witness reports from the scene said he had been drinking before he drowned.
“A post-mortem will reveal whether alcohol was on board, and whether it was enough to be a causal factor,” Supt Miles said.
A man who witnessed the tragedy claimed two men were sitting on the net’s float when one disappeared.
“They were both sitting there … two guys maybe 27, 28 years old, and the guy says hold my beer,” he said.
“I said ‘stop’, you could see what was going to happen.
“He tried to jump off but the current took him, he came up once and I swam to him but then he went under the net.”
The visibly shaken witness said the man did not resurface.
“It was so f***ing obvious what was going to happen, it’s why I yelled ‘don’t!
“It’s so sad.”
Mourners rushed to social media to grieve the loss of Mr Brown.
Jake Lawrence said via Facebook: “Rest in paradise jakey brown, glad I got to grow up with you back in the day. You’ll be missed by many mate.”
The Paradise Point Parklands swimming enclosure was closed on Monday.
