Helensvale home invasion: Laura May Carter, Brendan Wayne Clayton charged

Two people charged with carrying out a terrifying home invasion at a Gold Coast home have faced court, with new details of the shocking incident now revealed.

Helensvale Home Invasion scene

Police claim a teenager who allegedly helped carry out a terrifying home invasion on the Gold Coast livestreamed on social media from a stolen Maserati.

Laura May Carter, 18, appeared in Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday facing numerous serious offences including robbery with violence, dangerous conduct with a weapon, and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

It is alleged Carter, from South Toowoomba, and two men were armed with a gun and a knife when they broke into a home on North Bank Crt, Helensvale at about 6am Tuesday.

One of the men allegedly went into the house while Carter and her other alleged co-offender ransacked a Porsche parked outside.

A scuffle allegedly broke out inside between one of the intruders and a 51-year-old man inside, during which he lost a shoe.

It is alleged the man made it outside with a handbag before he and his two accomplices turned back and demanded the shoe be returned, kicking at the door and throwing rocks at the home.

Police claim the man carrying the double-barrel shotgun stuck the weapon inside through a hole his group made in the front door, telling those inside to hand over the keys to the Porsche. The trio then allegedly fled in the suspected stolen Mercedes they arrived in.

It is alleged Carter and the two men soon returned for their targets’ Maserati.

Police prosecutor Greg McKenzie said on Tuesday that Carter allegedly went live on Instagram while inside the luxury car, and could be heard in the recorded footage saying, “Yeah Maserati, cuz [sic]”.

The court was told the stolen car was tracked away from the Coast that morning.

Carter allegedly abandoned it and stole a Kia from a family stopped on the side of the road.

She and one of her alleged fellow burglars, Brendan Wayne Clayton, were arrested when they stopped at Drewvale later that day.

Both were held in custody overnight for their cases to be mentioned in court on Wednesday.

Sgt McKenzie opposed Carter’s bail, saying the community needed protection from those “terrorising people in their own home”.

Magistrate Louisa Pink granted Carter’s bail, saying her youth and lack of criminal history meant she could be at risk of spending too much time in custody awaiting indictment to a higher court.

Carter must report to police three times a week and obey a curfew upon her release. Her case will return to court on May 18.

Clayton did not make an application for bail when his case was mentioned. He will be remanded in custody until his matter is next heard on June 8.

No one else has been charged at this stage.
