The man charged with killing a 69-year-old man whose body was found in a “mummified” state in his Gold Coast home has been identified as the victim’s stepson.
Nikola Golem, 48, faces one charge of murder in relation to the death of Tomislav Nemes, who is believed to have lain dead for more than a year in his $3 million Benowa home.
Court documents allege Mr Golem killed his stepfather at their Edinburgh Rd home on an unknown date between August 1, 2021 and February 28, 2022.
Mr Nemes’ body was discovered by police conducting a welfare check on April 17.
It is understood that the welfare check came after relatives of Mr Nemes, who had moved to the Gold Coast from Canberra in 2018, became concerned when they were unable to contact him at the home he shared with his wife and stepson.
The relatives had flown to the Gold Coast from the nation’s capital to visit Mr Nemes three days before his body was found.
Mr Golem was arrested and charged on Tuesday. He did not appear in person when his case was briefly mentioned in Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning.
Solicitor Breannan Callaghan, of Vered Turner Lawyers, said she had spoken with Mr Golem that morning and would be applying for legal aid funding on his behalf.
Ms Callaghan did not indicate whether her client planned to apply for bail.
Mr Golem remains in custody and will not be required to appear when his case is next mentioned on September 22.
His lawyer did not provide comment to reporters outside the courthouse.
Police are still appealing to the public for any information regarding the April 17 welfare check.
Police released footage of the day they checked on Mr Nemes.
It shows officers climbing over a fence beside the house and walking up to the back deck of the home.
One officer was seen knocking on the screen doors to get the attention of anyone inside the home.
A woman came to the door before police walked inside the home.
The footage shows a man and a woman inside the home.
They are urging any friends and family of Mr Nemes or anyone who visited the property in recent years to come forward.
