A YOUNG woman arrested along with nine other juveniles in a dramatic take-down after police tracked two allegedly stolen cars to the Gold Coast claims she’ll fight the charges.
Elsie May Baker appeared in Southport Magistrates Court on Monday for robbery and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.
It is alleged the 18-year-old was one of five teenagers travelling in a stolen Subaru Forrester in Main Beach just after 6pm on Saturday.
Police were searching for the vehicle and an allegedly stolen Suzuki Swift at the time.
Five police cars and a chopper were used to track down the cars, with officers cordoning off Woodroffe Ave and deploying spikes to stop the vehicles.
Baker was arrested at the scene alongside another nine children – aged 13 to 18 – who were also allegedly travelling in the cars.
The Seventeen Mile Rocks woman appeared in court via video-link from the watch-house, where she had been since her arrest.
The court was told Baker was on bail for unrelated charges at the time of the alleged offending.
Defence lawyer Sunil Dutt said Baker claimed she got into the vehicle after someone else inside recognised her while driving past, and she was not directly involved in the alleged robbery.
“She’s going to contest the charges … on that basis, I ask that she be granted bail,” Mr Dutt said.
He told the court that Baker was looking for full-time work while helping care for her seven siblings.
Baker was granted bail under strict conditions, including reporting to police twice a week and having no contact with her co-accused.
The matter will next be mentioned in Ipswich Magistrates Court on January 24.
Her co-accused are expected to appear in Southport Childrens Court next month.
