Paramedics have treated four people with serious injuries after a nasty seven-vehicle crash on a Gold Coast stretch of the M1, which involved a truck and has caused significant delays.

The crash occurred at Coomera about 5.40am on Friday, a Gold Coast police spokeswoman said.

Seven vehicles were involved in the incident, which has caused traffic chaos on the motorway and impacted northbound and southbound lanes.

Initial information suggested a car travelling north crashed, mounted a barricade and ended up in southbound lanes. The incident occurred just north of exit 54.

Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) paramedics treated seven people, including a man with head and abdominal injuries, who was initially reported to be in a critical condition.

Paramedics have taken all patients to Gold Coast University Hospital, including:

– The man with head and abdominal injuries in a serious condition.

– A woman aged in her 50s in a serious but stable condition, who was trapped in her car.

– A patient with lower limb injuries in a serious condition.

– A patient in a serious but stable condition.

– Three more stable patients.

QAS Gold Coast operations supervisor Sam Thwaites said: “QAS were called to a seven-vehicle crash on the M1 … extensive damage to all vehicles.”.

“In total, we had seven patients,” he said.

“There was extensive force and damage to all vehicles. These patients are all very fortunate to get away with the injuries they have.

“It could have been a lot more severe and it could have had a lot more affect on the motorway and traffic too.”

Mr Thwaites said six ambulances responded, as well as a critical care paramedic, supervisor and the High Acuity Response Unit.

“We expect traffic will probably be slow both northbound and southbound between the Coomera and Pimpama areas,” he said.

QAS has not provided the age and gender of some of the people treated.

Multiple Queensland Fire and Emergency Services vehicles were also called to the scene.

Police and QAS warned the incident had caused delays of at least an hour.

Motorists were warned to seek alternative routes if possible, but service roads have been jam-packed with vehicles.

Police will be investigating the Coomera crash.

Meanwhile, multiple other crashes of varying severity have been reported on the M1 on Friday morning, including a collision involving two motorcycles at Ormeau, near exit 41.

Paramedics, including critical care, were called after the motorbikes crashed in the southbound lanes just before 7am.

Two male patients, of an undisclosed age, were treated for leg injuries.

One of the riders was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital and another was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital, both in a stable condition.

The wreckage from the crash involving the motorcycles was moved to the side of the road, but the collision was expected to cause further delays.
