Aussie road rules you’ve probably never heard of

A GOLD Coast man punched a driver twice in the face during a terrifying road rage incident that could have gone “horribly wrong”.

Dylan Eruera Johnson told the Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday: “I made a mistake… I should have let it go.” He pleaded guilty to one count of assault occasioning bodily harm.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Glenn Whittle told the court there had been an “incident” when Johnson and the complaint were driving towards Surfers Paradise about 1pm on December 22 last year.

The victim pulled over onto a side street and stopped to check his maps.

Johnson followed, got of of his car, exchanged words with the victim before punching him once to the face.

The victim went to get out of his car and Johnson punched him again.

Sgt Whittle told the court that when the victim did get out of his vehicle, a bystander intervened to stop the fight.

Magistrate John McInnes fined Johnson $1500.

“The serious aspect is that this arose out of a road rage incident and those things can get out of control,” he said.

“It can go horribly wrong.”

Magistrate McInnes also briefly referred to a recent road rage incident which resulted in a man being charged with murder.

Johnson, who represented himself, said since the assault he had been involved in a few incidents he just “let slide”.

He said he had also purchased a dashboard camera, and had lined up a job in Rockhampton.
