Crime: Weekend of bikie gang warfare on Gold Coast streets

Two men with alleged bikie links have been charged after a violent incident at a Gold Coast unit where a gun was produced and people stabbed.

TWO accused bikie gang members allegedly tried to set fire to a Gold Coast unit before being stabbed, police say.

Five people with ties to outlaw motorcycle gangs were taken to hospital after the wild weekend of violence, which included two stabbings, fuel being thrown at a unit, a gun drawn and another man hospitalised with a mystery gun wound.

All four incidents have been linked to the Finks, Mongols, Bandidos and possibly the Comancheros.

Police have since spoken with senior members of the clubs.

Detectives overnight charged a man, 42, with attempted arson and dangerous conduct with a weapon after a violent incident at a Biggera Waters unit in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police say two alleged men with outlaw motorcycle gang links went to a Marine Parade unit and threw accelerants at the front glass door.

Several people who were inside the unit came out on to the footpath, where a firearm was allegedly brandished.

During the altercation two men – who told police they were in the suburb for a party – suffered stab wounds.

The pair self-presented at the Gold Coast University Hospital yesterday.

A 26-year-old man, 26, of Upper Coomera has been charged with two counts of wounding.

Both men are due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on Monday

On Sunday, Gold Coast police Detective Superintendent Brendan Smith warned bikie gangs they should be “looking over their shoulder” if they are going to be doing something illegal.

“They are all driven by greed,” he said.

“There is a mindset of power, one week they are best mates, the next week they are stabbing each other.

“It’s a lifestyle choice they have made which could end up with them in jail or worse.”

Det Supt Smith said the general public had nothing to fear, with violence confined to the gangs.

“It is clearly tensions between clubs and also within clubs,” he said.

“It is very important the public understand this sort of behaviour is not tolerated by us and we will throw whatever resources we can at it.”

Police have launched Operation Tango Grey to crackdown on the bikie tensions.

“I certainly have no concerns about the safety of the general public,” he said.

When asked what had sparked the tensions, Det Supt Smith said: “It could be as simple as a dispute between members that has escalated.

“It’s probably too early to say what exactly has happened.”

The weekend of violence started on Friday night with a wild brawl outside the Toybox Showgirls strip club in Surfers Paradise. A man suffered a fractured eye socket.

Five men – from the Mongols and Bandidos bikie clubs – were charged with affray.

Det Supt Smith said that same night a man from the Finks bikie club arrived at the Gold Coast University Hospital with a gunshot wound.

He said police believed that incident may have occurred in Southport.

Police were then called to a park across the road from the Pink Monkey Bar & Grill at Burleigh Heads, about 10.10pm on Saturday, after a consensual fight broke out between four men.

Two men were stabbed – one in the chest and one in the back – during the brawl.

Both were taken to Gold Coast University Hospital but have not made a complaint to police.
