Tradie’s ute hijacked in costly daylight robbery

DECEMBER 1: A 65-year-old plumber was the victim of a brazen daylight car theft Wednesday morning in Varsity Lakes.

Between 8am and 8.10am, Jeffrey Regazzoli parked his white Ford Courier ute – registration 205XOB – in Wattle St, only to have it stolen minutes later.

Mr Regazzoli was speaking with tradesmen at a residential worksite when he saw his vehicle reversing over the footpath, with an unknown, masked man behind the wheel.

Police said Mr Regazzoli ran out into the middle of the road to try to stop the vehicle, but the driver drove around the man and fled the scene.

Mr Regazzoli alleged the vehicle was “headed straight for him”, but swerved around him “just in time” and sped off.

“I jumped in a mate’s ute and we tried to tail him but we lost him,” he said.

All of the man’s tools were inside the vehicle, allegedly worth thousands of dollars.

Mr Regazzoli said he was “extremely stressed” over the incident and had struggled to find enough work due to recent wet weather conditions across the Gold Coast.

Police said investigations were ongoing and no one was injured in the incident.
