Capalaba teen charged with attempted robbery of cars in Gold Coast

An alleged wannabe thief has been caught out in his undies after police came knocking at his door on Monday night.

Officers threatened to kick in the door of the 18-year-old before he answered them dressed only in his jocks and was promptly arrested.

“If you don’t open the door I’m going to kick the door in,” a police officer can be heard shouting before the teen opened the door.

“I’m here because you’re wanted mate, you’re under arrest.”

The Capalaba man has since been charged in relation to a string of alleged attempted car thefts, which police say all took place in a 32-minute period on Saturday April 6.

Officers allege that between 4.13pm and 4.45pm on that afternoon there were five separate attempts to steal cars at Southport, Main Beach and Surfers Paradise.

During each incident attempts were allegedly made to forcibly remove the drivers from their vehicles, however none of the alleged attempts were successful.

Police say that the offenders involved left the scene in a Toyota Hilux reported stolen from Cleveland on Thursday, April 4, and later found abandoned in Mount Cotton on the evening of Saturday, April 6.

The 18-year-old arrested last night in connection with the incidents has been charged with five counts of attempted robbery while armed, one count of fraud relating to an alleged petrol drive-off and disguising his face with intent to commit an indictable offence.

He was denied police bail and is due to appear at Cleveland Magistrates Court on April 16.

Police said their investigations are ongoing and urged anyone with relevant dashcam footage to come forward.
