A man accused of assaulting another man in the middle of a Burleigh Heads street has been committed to stand trial.

Cain Zilus Bird appeared in Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday, facing one charge of grievous bodily harm.

It is alleged the 19-year-old got into an argument with another man outside restaurant and bar Justin Lane at about 1am on September 25 last year.

Bird then allegedly punched the 23-year-old Palm Beach man in the face before fleeing on foot.

His alleged victim suffered a broken jaw and lost at least four teeth. He later underwent surgery at Gold Coast University Hospital.

Police released CCTV footage of the alleged assault as part of a public appeal for information, which ended when Bird took himself to the Broadbeach police station on October 6.

The Tweed Heads man was charged the same day and released on bail.

Prosecutor Donn Reid submitted several witness statements to the court on Wednesday, including from detectives and a medical practitioner.

Bird appeared in court dressed in a blue collared shirt and supported by a family member.

He said only, “No” when asked by Magistrate Janice Crawford whether he had anything to say as to why the matter should not be committed to a higher court.

No formal plea has been entered.

Bird refused to speak to reporters upon leaving the Southport courthouse, staying silent in response to questions about the alleged assault and his upcoming trial.

No date has yet been confirmed for the matter’s listing in the Southport District Court.
